October 2011

Dear Parents,

We are off to a good start in the school year.  We are all feeling comfortable and settling into the routine.  The children are well acquainted and seem to be enjoying each other’s company.  Hopefully your child has come home excited to talk about their day.

If you have not done so already; in case of spills, or “other” accidents – we ask that you please bring in a complete outfit in a plastic bag labeled with your child’s name on it, (please include socks and extra shoes or slippers/slipper socks).  This will be kept here at school.

Please make sure you give yourself enough time with your child before class to take care of everything such as, using the restroom, hanging up coats, saying good-byes, etc.  I do start greeting the children 15 minutes before class starts so we may start our day promptly at 8:45 am.

Occasionally our parking lot is blocked off for recess.  If this is the case, do not park by the barriers, instead please park in the church parking lot.

The children do go out for recess as long as the temperature is above 32˚.  Please make sure your child wears a coat, hat, and gloves if needed.  We must have a note from a doctor or parent if your child is not allowed to go outside.

With the cool weather approaching, we will have a few coats, sweaters, and boots that look alike; please make sure your child’s initials are on the article of clothing.  We do not always see what your child came into school wearing.  So when your child’s special person picks up, it will be easier for them.  Also, it would make it easier if you hang your child’s coat under their mailboxes.  We have already had mix-ups with coats, lunchboxes and backpacks, (especially with the girls).

If you are volunteering to help out for special events at school, such as party days, lunch days, bringing your child in for special presentations, or any other school event, we regret to say that siblings will not be allowed to attend unless otherwise stated.

If you have a child in a classroom down the hall, please pick that child up first.  It makes dismissal a lot easier on everyone.  Thank you for your cooperation.

We would like to send out a big thank you to Scott Sly (Saige & Layton’s dad, Mrs. Natalie & Mrs. Millie’s class) for taking the time over the summer to wax all the classroom floors, & also to Bob Coates (Mrs. Millie’s husband) for waxing the hallways.  Thank you so much!  Thank you to the Pellegrino family (Dante’s parents, Mrs. Natalie’s class) for bringing in Transportation Services Incorporated (a semi truck used for their company).  The children enjoyed everything about the semi, from standing next to it and seeing how big it is, to all the wheels, the horn, and much more.  Thank you.

We are in our fourth week of school and the children have been introduced to many things, such as the pink tower (large to small), brown stair (thickest to thinnest), knobbed and knobless cylinders (height, dimension, increase and decrease).  These are certainly big words for your children, so please encourage them to talk about the materials.  We discuss the weather & weather related topics on a daily basis, and we continue the lessons from discovery class, as well as sign language.  In math and language, each child is moved on accordingly.  Please encourage your child to talk about their “specials” as well as their day.

In art class, Mrs. Gerri (our new art teacher) had the children making really great projects, from tracing their arm & hand to make trees, acorns, sunflowers, collages, to raccoons.  The children enjoyed their artwork, (please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for art.)

In sign language, Mrs. Tami introduced the children to signs for “Hello new friend”, as well as showing your child the sign that begins their name, she also introduced numbers. Please encourage your children to sign to you.

In music, Mrs. Sue introduced the children to the magical musical dragons, as well as singing the song “Puff the Magic Dragon”.  They were introduced to “Rhapsody in Blue”, George Gershwin and “Fantasia 2000”.

In discovery class, Mrs. Sue talked with the children about landfills, dumpsters, garbage and recycling.  They discussed and were shown different working trucks, examples of sleeper semi trucks, and different types of building equipment.

In Gym class, Miss Billie Jo has introduced the children to warm-up exercises, as well as the rules in gym & recess. She also explained to the children the importance of following the rules.  (Please make sure your child wears socks and sneakers for gym as well as clothes they can run, jump, and tumble in.)

Now for reminders for the month of October;

We have begun collecting non-perishable items.    This includes canned goods, cereal, diapers, laundry soap, paper towels, etc…  This will benefit the Trenton food bank. The collection will run through Wednesday October 19th.

Wednesday October 5th, there will be a parents’ guild meeting at 7:00 pm.  If you cannot make it to the meetings, but would like to help out, you can leave a note in the parents’ guild box located in the office.

Wednesday October 19th, the children will be delivering the non-perishable items to the church for the local food bank.  If your child is not scheduled for this day, or is scheduled in the afternoon, and you would like them to participate, you may bring them in to help out.

Pumpkin patch – this is an event where pumpkins are set out in the grass behind the school.  The children “pick” a pumpkin.  If your child is not scheduled for this day, we will “pick” a pumpkin for them.  We will let you know as soon as the date is available to us.

On Friday October 28th – we will be having our Halloween party in the am only.  If your child does not come to school on this day, or is not in the morning session, and you would like them to attend the party, you may switch a day or change them to the morning class for this day.  As an example of a “switch day” if your child attends classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, you may switch one of these days to Friday. We only ask that you let us know in advance.  Your child should come to school in costume (please no hand-held objects, for example shields, wands etc.)  Also, if your child stays a full day please be sure to send in a change of clothes, as well as a light lunch.  A sign-up sheet for items needed for the party as well as for volunteers will be posted.  We will only need 3 volunteers for most parties.  So, if your child has been with CMC, please try to give the new parents a chance to volunteer.  If you would like to send in a treat to pass out, you may. (We have 23 children in the class).

Monday, October 31st – Friday, November 18th – Are you wondering what to do with all that extra Halloween candy?  Well, we will be collecting it for the troops.  You may drop the candy off in the office.

September 2011

Dear Parents,

We would like to extend a big welcome to all of our new friends that are joining us this school year, and a big welcome back to our returning friends.  We are looking forward to a wonderful and exiting new school year.

There are a few things we would like to make you aware of, and a few reminders.  Please make sure you give yourself enough time with your child before class to take care of everything such as, using the restroom, hanging up coats, saying good-byes, etc.  Our morning session runs from 8:45 am – 11:30 am.  I will be greeting children as early as 8:30 am.  If you are picking up your child from the morning session, they will need to be picked up no later than 11:45.  If your child is staying for lunch, or you are bringing them in for lunch before the afternoon session, please let us know so that we may staff the classroom properly.  The afternoon session is from 12:45 pm – 3:30 pm.  Drop off for afternoon as early as 12:30 pm.  You need to pick up no later than 3:45.  Also, your child must be released from the classroom only, if we are outside or in another part of the school, please wait outside the classroom.  This is for the safety of your child.    When a person unfamiliar to us, is picking up your child from school, we will ask to see ID, and make sure their name is on the emergency card.  If someone new is picking them up, and they are not on the emergency card, please write a note or call us (734-675-8280), and we will write down the name, plus still ask to see ID.  Please understand this is for the safety of your child.

Everyone should have received a policy manual.  One very important policy addresses school arrivals and departures.  Please enter and exit the school from Manning Drive.  Do Not cut through the doctors’ office or park in their spaces, as the doctors’ office lot is private property.  So please enter and exit off of Manning Drive, to ensure the safety of everyone.  Also for the safety of your children, please drive slowly while entering the parking lot.  Please pass along this information to anyone else who will pick up your child.  Occasionally our parking lot is blocked off for recess.  If this is the case, do not park by the barriers, instead please park in the church parking lot.

Please do not let your child sign themselves into school at the sign-in desk.  We must have the signature of the adult only.

If your child is going to be absent or tardy for any reason, please give us a call at 734-675-8280, and let us know the reason for the absence.  We are required to report to the Wayne County Health Department any outbreaks of illness in the school.  If there is no answer, please leave a message.

If your child is in need of medications, we will need a form filled out in the office; this also includes permission for the use of sun blocks, Chapstick and lotions.  All medications (including non-prescription) need to be labeled with child’s name on it.

We have a snack sign-up calendar posted outside the classroom for a.m. and p.m. classes.  Feel free to sign up for a nutritional snack whenever you can.  The children enjoy the variety and it makes your child feel very special when they are thanked by all of their friends.  We only ask that you do not send in peanuts or peanut products, as some of our students do have allergies.  Also please stay away from fruit punch and other products containing red dye.  On occasion, there will be items that our classroom is in need of, such as Kleenex, paper towels, 5 oz. cups, wipes, etc.  When the need arises, we will post it on the “giving tree”, which is located in the hallway, above the snack lists.  Just remove the tag from the tree.  Please do not think we are requiring any of you to bring things in.  That is not the case!  If you know you can help out, that will be great.  If not, that is O.K., too.  The same goes for snacks, so please, do not feel obligated.  If you would like your child to celebrate their birthday at school, we ask that you send in bite size cupcakes.  Other ideas are Jell-o or cookies (in the shape of their initial or the number of their age.)

Throughout the school year, we will be collecting pop bottles. The container is located at the front entrance. The monies collected from the bottles will benefit our specials classes.  We also collect Tyson labels, Meijer Rewards and box tops.  We also have a “Scrip Program”.  The Scrip cards are similar to gift cards, the big difference is, your child’s school benefits from this program.  For each Scrip card you order, the school gets back a percentage depending on which vendor it’s from, and the amount purchased.  The orders will be sent in by 10:00 am every Tuesday, and will be available for pick up on Friday.  If you have any questions, or would like to participate in this program, please see Mrs. Tracy in the office or call 734-675-8280.

At times I will be sending home multiple orders for the Scholastic Book Club.  If you order, you will need to make out one check or money order to Scholastic Books, (NO CASH PLEASE).  Again, please do not feel that you are obligated to order.

In case of spills, or “other” accidents – we ask that you please bring in a complete outfit in a plastic bag labeled with your child’s name on it, (please include socks and extra shoes or slippers/slipper socks).  This will be kept here at school.

Please put your child’s name on their lunchboxes and backpacks as well.

I will be sending a newsletter home on a monthly basis.  All of my newsletters will be printed on green paper.  This will also include a calendar with the monthly events, which you can post on your refrigerator.

If you have not done so already, please make sure your child’s paperwork is turned into the office ASAP.  (Allergy list, emergency cards, etc.)

The children will begin their “specials” classes this week.  Please encourage your child to talk about their “specials” classes, as well as their day.

We do have a parents’ guild that meets once a month to discuss fundraisers and events.  The fundraisers sponsored by the parents’ guild throughout the year bring in many activities for your child, such as art projects, karate, and Santa Shop, just to name a few.  If you cannot make it to the meetings, but would like to help out, you can leave a note in the parents’ guild box located in the office.

Now for reminders for the month of September;

On Monday, September 12thwe will be having our first Olga’s night out. It runs from 10:30 a. m. through 9:00 p.m.  You must have your coupon in order for the school to receive a percentage of your bill.  Don’t forget to order your Scrip for Olga’s night.

Wednesday September 21st is picture day. If you child is not scheduled for class on this day, you may bring them in for pictures only. We will inform you of the times as soon as they are available to us. Don’t forget your smile!!

If there are any changes or upcoming events we will let you know as soon as they are available to us.

For any of you who don’t already know me, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself.  I have been with CMC since 2002.  This is my eight year teaching, and I am looking forward to another school year.  I have been married to my husband John for almost 33 years.  We live in Southgate, and have three sons.  Matthew is a network engineer, and is married to Lisa.  They are expecting their 1st child any day now, (our 1st grandchild – a girl.)  Derrick is a production manager, and is married to Sherry.  Our youngest, Michael, has a bachelors degree in graphic design.

On Fridays, Mrs. Anita is my assistant in the classroom.  She also is the morning latchkey worker, (and my sister-in-law).  Mrs. Anita is married to my brother Joe.  They have been married almost 35 years, and have two children; Andrea is a social worker, and Jeff is in marketing.

If there are any changes or upcoming events we will let you know as soon as they are available to us.

Please make sure your child is dressed accordingly for classes, (art & gym), as well as for the weather.

Last, if your child is going to be absent or tardy for any reason, please give us a call and state the nature of the absence. We can be reached by calling 734-675-8280.

Dear Parents,

To begin with, we would like to thank all of you who made our Thanksgiving Day party a real feast.  Your children are wonderful!  They enjoyed all of the food, and most of all, their time and conversation with their friends.  Thank you to all who participated in the observation days.  It is wonderful to see how interested you are in your children’s education.  We hope you were able to get a better understanding of what goes on during your child’s time in the classroom.  We have a few thank yous to send out.  First of all, thank you to all the families who donated candy. The 33 pounds of candy went to the soldiers.  Thank you to Nora Chapa Mendoza for the “Day of the Dead” presentation.  The children really enjoyed the dances, and decorating their Calaveras (sugar skulls).  Thank you to Mrs. Heather for the wonderful “keepsake” art work.  We hope everyone enjoyed the final project.  Thank you to Mrs. Wendy for heading up the Avon fundraiser, as well as all of you who ordered from her.  Remember, if you do not have an Avon representative, Mrs. Wendy will be glad to help you out.  Thank you to Alesha Caselli (Jamis’ mom – Mrs. Mary’s class) for taking over the box tops.  We have already earned $300 this school year.  So let’s keep sending in those box tops.  A big thank you to all of you for your continuing support of the Olga’s and Wendy’s nights out, and last but not least, thank you to all who have sold, and continue to sell the 3 – digit lottery tickets.

Newsletter – October 2010

Dear Parents,

We are off to a good start in the school year.  We are all feeling comfortable and settling into the routine.  The children are well acquainted and seem to be enjoying each other’s company.  Hopefully your child has come home excited to talk about their day.

If you have not done so already; in case of spills, or “other” accidents – we ask that you please bring in a complete outfit in a plastic bag labeled with your child’s name on it, (please include socks and extra shoes or slippers/slipper socks).  This will be kept here at school.

With the cool weather approaching, we will have a few coats, sweaters, and boots that look alike; please make sure your child’s initials are on the article of clothing.  We do not always see what your child came into school wearing.  So when their “special person” picks up, it will be easier for them.  Also, it would make it easier if you hang your child’s coat under their mailboxes.

If you have not done so already, please make sure your child’s paperwork is turned into the office ASAP.  (Allergy list, emergency cards, etc.)

We are in our fifth week of school and the children have been introduced to many things, such as the pink tower (large to small), brown stair (thickest to thinnest), knobbed and knobless cylinders (height, dimension, increase and decrease).  These are certainly big words for your children, so please encourage them to talk about the materials.  We have also have introduced dry pouring as well as spooning, tonging and tweezing.  We discuss the weather & weather related topics on a daily basis, and we continue the lessons from discovery class, as well as sign language.  In math and language, each child is moved on accordingly.  Please encourage your child to talk about their “specials” as well as their day.

In art class, Mrs. Heather read the book, “The Kissing Hand”, and made your child’s first handprint artwork of the year.  The children learned about “magic colors”, (mixing colors together to make a different color).  They also made a color wheel with frosting, and then spread the frosting on vanilla wafers.  Now this was a project the children really enjoyed.

In sign language, Mrs. Tami introduced the children to signs for “Hello new friend”.  She read the book “Chicka Chicka Boom”, to introduce abc’s as well as showing your child the sign that begins their name.  Please encourage your children to sign to you.

In music, Mrs. Sue introduced the children to the magical musical dragons, as well as sang to the song “Puff the Magic Dragon”.  The children were introduced to many different drums, from bongos to bass, & snare, just to name a few.  She read the Dr. Seuss book, “Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb” dum didi dum didi dum dum dum.

In discovery class, Mrs. Sue has introduced things associated with Canada, (the Windsor tunnel, Niagara Falls, Quebec, Georgia Bay, and some French Canadian facts.)

In Gym class, Miss Billie Jo has introduced the children to warm-up exercises, as well as the rules in gym & recess. She also explained to the children the importance of following the rules.

Now for reminders for the month of October;

On Friday, October 1st, we will be collecting non-perishable items.    This includes canned goods, cereal, diapers, laundry soap, paper towels, etc…  This will benefit the Trenton food bank. The collection will run through Wednesday October 20th.

On Monday, October 4th, we will be having our first Olga’s night out. It runs from 10:30 a. m. through 9:00 p.m.  You must have your coupon in order for the school to receive a percentage of your bill.  Don’t forget to order your Scrip for Olga’s night.

Tuesday October 5th, there will be a parents’ guild meeting at 7:00 pm.  The first parents’ guild fundraiser is underway.  The Macy’s – “Shop for a cause” – certificates are available in the office until Friday October 15th.  They sell for $5.00 each.  The entire $5.00 goes to your child’s school and all the monies that Macy’s makes on October 16th goes to the many charities that they sponsor.  If you cannot make it to the meetings, but would like to help out, you can leave a note in the parents’ guild box located in the office.

Saturday October 16th, Macy’s shop for a cause.  Volunteers are needed to help sell the passes at the Southland Macy’s.  For times needed see the sign-up sheet in the office.

Monday October 18thpumpkin patch – this is an event where pumpkins are set out in the grass behind the school.  The children “pick” a pumpkin.  If your child is not scheduled for this day, we will “pick” a pumpkin for them.

Wednesday October 20th, food drive ends.

Wednesday October 20th, the children will be delivering the non-perishable items to the church for the local food bank.  If your child is not scheduled for this day, or is scheduled in the afternoon, and you would like them to participate, you may bring them in to help out.

On Friday October 29th – we will be having our Halloween party in the am only. (We have 26 children in the class).

Coming up;

Wednesday November 3rd, parents’ guild meeting at 7 p.m.

Thursday November 4th, picture retakes

Tuesday November 9th, Wednesday November 10th, and Thursday November 11th we will be having classroom observations.  This is an opportunity for you to come into the classroom & see what your child’s day consists of.  Sign up sheets will be posted.  If you cannot make it on these days and would like to observe, please feel free to talk to us, and we can work something out.

If there are any changes or upcoming events we will let you know as soon as they are available to us.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the “Scrip Program”.  The orders will be sent in by 10:00 am every Tuesday, and will be available for pick up on Friday.  If you have any questions, or would like to participate in this program, please see Mrs. Tracy in the office or call 734-675-8280.

Please make sure your child is dressed accordingly for classes, (art & gym), as well as for the weather.

Last, if your child is going to be absent or tardy for any reason, please give us a call and state the nature of the absence. We can be reached by calling 734-675-8280.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to us at any time, or call us at 734-675-8280.

Thank you,

Mrs. Chey and Miss Billie Jo

If your child is staying for lunch, or you are bringing them in for lunch before the afternoon session, please let us know so that we may staff the class room properly.

Please put your child’s name on their lunchboxes as well.

Now for reminders for the month of September;

The children will begin their “specials” classes this week.  Please encourage your child to talk about their “specials” classes, as well as their day.

Wednesday September 15th, there will be a parents’ guild meeting at 7:00 pm.  The fundraisers sponsored by the parents’ guild throughout the year, bring in many activities for your child, such as art projects, karate, and Santa Shop, just to name a few.  If you cannot make it to the meetings, but would like to help out, you can leave a note in the parents’ guild box located in the office.

Wednesday September 22nd is picture day.

This is my seventh year teaching, and I am looking forward to another school year.  I have been married to my husband John for almost 32 years.  We live in Southgate, and have three sons.  Matthew is a network engineer, and is married to Lisa.  Derrick works in retail sales, and is married to Sherry.  Our youngest, Michael, has a bachelors degree in graphic design.

Billie Jo lives in Riverview with Joe, their son Dakota, daughter Maria, and Billie Jo’s sister, Cassandra.  Maria attends CMC, and is in the 4th – 6th classroom with Mrs. Kim.  Dakota attended CMC for pre-K and is currently attending Riverview schools.  Cassandra is studying for her pre-requisites in culinary arts at Schoolcraft College.  Billie Jo and her family enjoy fishing.  Billie Jo is also our gym teacher.  Throughout the year, Billie Jo will talk about water safety, boat safety, and fishing.

On Fridays, Mrs. Anita is my assistant in the classroom.  She also is the morning latchkey worker, (and my sister-in-law).  Mrs. Anita is married to my brother Joe.  They have been married almost 34 years, and have two children; Andrea is a social worker, and Jeff is in marketing.
